Excursion to Samaria Gorge - Departure from Heraklion or Chania

Go hiking in the Samaria Gorge, in the heart of a spectacular landscape!
After being picked up from your hotel, you'll head for the Omalos plateau, the entry point to the Samaria Gorge.
From Xyloskalo, you'll begin your 16-18 kilometer hike through the gorge, following an ancient riverbed. You'll pass through a wilderness bordered by sheer cliffs, past a Byzantine church and along natural caves. Along the way, you'll have the chance to discover the abandoned village of Santa Maria and perhaps spot some wild kri-kri goats, emblematic of Crete.
The most impressive point of the route will undoubtedly be the "Iron Gates", a narrow passage between two 300-meter-high cliffs. You'll finish your walk in the coastal village of Agia Roumeli, on the Libyan coast, where you'll have free time to eat, relax or swim.
This excursion, accessible only on foot, will allow you to discover one of Crete's most emblematic natural wonders. At the end of the day, you'll board a ferry to return to your bus, and be taken back to your departure point.
