Beschreibung

Join a state-approved guide for an authentic tour of one of the Meteora's monasteries!

Located on the Thessaly plain, the Meteora are imposing pillars of grey rock, sculpted by erosion, that can reach heights of over 600 metres. These immense rock formations are among the most impressive sites in Greece. They are home to a group of Orthodox monasteries perched on striking rock formations.

The Meteora monasteries were built between the 14th and 15th centuries and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to their historical, cultural and religious importance. Some of the monasteries are still inhabited by monks, and visitors can tour these working places of worship to discover their rich cultural heritage.

You'll have a choice of several monasteries, such as the Great Meteoron or Varlaam. The Great Meteoron is the largest and oldest of the Meteor monasteries. It sits on top of the highest rock formation and offers spectacular panoramic views. It is famous for its well-preserved medieval frescoes and rich collection of manuscripts.

The Varlaam Monastery is known for its impressive fortified façade and the colourful frescoes inside the main church. It also houses a rich collection of manuscripts and liturgical artefacts.

Your private, state-qualified guide will tell you about the history and legends of these monasteries. You'll gain a better understanding of the monks who inhabited these buildings, their way of life and their unique role in the area's religious and cultural heritage.

This guided tour will allow you to discover these unique and fascinating sites, while benefiting from the expertise of a state-approved guide.
